Are you currently on an individual/family health plan prior to turning 65, such as a Marketplace ACA plan?
If so, your initial decision should be easy. You will need to sign up for both Medicare Parts A and B when you first become eligible or face a penalty if you sign up later.
Do you currently have a group health plan through your employer?
If so and you plan to remain on your group health plan you may want to delay Medicare. There are several things to consider first, give us a call and we will go over your options!
Are you retiring
soon?
If you are already enrolled in Medicare Part A you can enroll for Part B by completing a form that will need to be partially completed by you and then signed by your Employer. That way you will not be penalized for signing up late for Medicare Part B.

Are you already receiving Social Security benefits?
If so, you will automatically be signed up for Parts A and B effective the first day of the month you turn 65.

A Medicare Supplement plan, also called a Medigap plan, has a higher premium than a Medicare Advantage plan but a much lower out of pocket maximum.
A Medicare Supplement plan does not have a restrictive network because you can use any doctor or facility that accepts Medicare. A Medicare Advantage Plan has a more restrictive network because the Doctors and facilities must also be in the plan network.
A Medicare Advantage plan usually provides additional coverage that you do not get from Original Medicare and a Medigap plan, such as dental, vision, and hearing. You would purchase either a Medigap plan or an Advantage plan, but never both!

You are required to sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B in order to purchase one of these types of plans. These plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare.
These plans are required to cover all the services that Original Medicare covers. They usually cover additional services as well (dental, vision, hearing, etc..).
They are required to have an out of pocket maximum limit (usually around $5,000-$6,000).
The cost-sharing on these plans is equal to original Medicare.
There are different types of Medicare Advantage Plans. Many plans offer Part D drug coverage. These are called MAPD plans.
These plans all have a monthly Premium that in Georgia is typically between $17 and $70.
Most plans have a drug deductible between $100-$415 in Georgia.
Part D plans have different formularies (lists) of covered drugs.
There is an annual enrollment period during which you can change plans.
You will be penalized if you do not sign up when you first become eligible.

If you are still working and covered by your employer group health plan with 20 or more employees, you are able to delay Medicare enrollment without a penalty for late enrollment. Most people will go ahead and enroll in Part A, which is zero premium if you worked enough time and paid Medicare taxes. The only time you will not want to get Part A is if you have an HSA. Medicare plans don't have a high enough deductible for you to quality for having an HSA account.

Many people continue to work after 65 but still go on Medicare insurance because it may be less expensive and have more benefits.

This is a personal decision and everyone is different. We are both on Medicare plans and each of us chose a different option. Melissa hates risk and would rather pay more in premiums to lower her health care risk. Steve is the opposite. He didn't want to pay an additional premium and also wanted the extra benefits Medicare Advantage Plans provide. He has been saving all the money he would have paid for a Medicare Supplement Premium. We are both very happy with our decisions! It just goes to show there is a plan for everyone.
In 2023, the standard Medicare Part B premium amount is $164.90/month. If you didn't work long enough and pay Medicare taxes, you could also be required to pay a Part A premium (but most people don't). The Part B premium can be adjusted based on income. Right now they are looking at the 2021 tax return to determine if you will pay the standard amount or if they will charge you IRMAA (Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount).

You may have seen a TV commercial or ad regarding getting money back in your Social Security check. Plans vary by area, but this may be an option in your area. The ads that talk about getting all of the Part B premium back in your check are referring to Medicare Savings Programs available to people with low income.

There are also Medicare Advantage Plans that are not for people with low income that help pay a portion of your Medicare Part B premium. Some of the plans are geared toward people who only need medical benefits and not prescription drug benefits. This may be because the beneficiary has VA drug coverage or other credible drug coverage and prefers to use that instead of Medicare Part D drug coverage. There are also a few other plans that reduce the Part B premium. Usually there would be higher copays or fewer extra benefits. Contact me to find out more and check plan options in your area.
As an independent agent, I don't work for just one insurance company. I represent multiple companies including United HealthCare, Aetna, Humana, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Clover, Cigna, Wellcare, Omaha, and more. Different companies and plans could be a better fit for different people.

I will also check drug costs to find the best Part D Drug plan for you. There is never any pressure. I am here to help answer your questions you have now and in the future. I am also able to help you get enrolled and help with plan changes in the future. Also, there is never any cost to use for my services and I take your privacy very seriously.
